Jeremiah 20:5Sefaria

The fall of Jerusalem brings with it a total collapse of both its defenses and its economy. As the city crumbles, its vast wealth and carefully built structures are handed over to the enemy, with different types of property meeting distinct fates.

The resources of the city fall into several categories. The primary approach among commentators is that the city's core strength refers to its money and hidden treasures, since wealth provides people with a sense of power and security during times of crisis However, a different perspective suggests this strength specifically points to the physical defenses of the city, namely its fortresses and sturdy walls [מלבי״ם]. Beyond these defenses, the city holds vast resources accumulated through grueling human effort, including crops, gold, and silver Alongside the fruits of hard labor are rare, specialized valuables, such as precious stones and pearls

As the enemy takes control, the capture of the city is not merely a random event but a calculated process where the fate of each type of property is exact The strong structures and fortresses are simply handed over and conquered by the opposing forces. Meanwhile, the private property, the hard-earned wealth, and the personal valuables of the citizens are randomly plundered by common soldiers for their own use. In sharp contrast, the official royal treasures belonging to the kings of Judah are protected from the unorganized looting of the foot soldiers. Instead, these state treasures are systematically seized and transported directly into the official treasury of the king of Babylon.
