A wicked person should ideally face the consequences of his actions while he is still alive, feeling the full weight of God's anger firsthand. He should witness his own downfall with his very own eyes [מנחת שי, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ, אלשיך]. However, another perspective suggests that the eyes watching the ruin are not his own, but rather the eyes of every single one of his children, who are forced to witness the tragedy [אבן עזרא].

When considering the nature of this downfall, the primary approach among commentators is to view it as a complete disaster or sudden ruin. Yet, the imagery of this destruction takes different forms. Some understand it as a violent strike from a weapon, such as a spear or javelin [מצודת ציון]. Others envision the ruin as a personal pitcher or jug, setting the stage for the vivid metaphor of drinking that immediately follows [מלבי״ם].

The punishment is ultimately experienced as a bitter drink. The wicked individual, having spent a lifetime disrespecting God, is destined to consume God's anger and fury directly in this world [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ, אלשיך]. This is pictured as a toxic cup of poison or bitter water, poured specifically for the wrongdoer from a flask of divine rage [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].
