איוב, פרק כ״א, פסוק ח׳

Job 21:8Sefaria

זַרְעָ֤ם נָכ֣וֹן לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם עִמָּ֑ם וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

A common assumption is that those who act wickedly live in a state of constant fear, yet they are often seen enjoying profound family peace and material success [מלבי״ם]. Some link this picture of absolute tranquility and immense prosperity specifically to the generation of the Flood, who lived in complete quiet and comfort [חומת אנך].

This prosperity is heavily reflected in their family lives. Their children grow up to be established, wealthy, and firmly settled. Rather than having to move away and wander in search of a livelihood, the children remain in the exact same place as their parents. They live together, enjoying each other's company in complete harmony [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, these families are spared from tragedy. The parents do not suffer the sadness of burying their offspring, as all their children remain alive and well alongside them [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that this picture of success extends to future generations. While the older children are firmly established, the parents also live to see their younger children and even their grandchildren thrive right before their eyes [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. However, another perspective suggests that the focus remains entirely on the immediate children. In this view, the description does not introduce an additional generation, but simply reinforces the theme of family prosperity to strongly emphasize the depth of their success [מצודת דוד].
