איוב, פרק כ״א, פסוק כ״ה

Job 21:25Sefaria

וְזֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ מָרָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־אָ֝כַ֗ל בַּטּוֹבָֽה׃

Life often presents a stark contrast between those who enjoy peace and success and those who endure endless hardship. A tragic figure emerges in this context, representing someone who suffers continuously and ultimately dies in agony, standing in complete opposition to the comfortable and successful individual discussed prior.

Who is this person whose life ends in such bitterness? The primary approach among commentators is that this actually describes a righteous and holy individual [רש"י, מלבי"ם]. Throughout life, this person is plagued by misfortune, illness, and constant pain, leading to a bitter end [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. The reason for this intense suffering is that God is highly exacting with the righteous, choosing to punish them for their sins immediately in this world [רש"י].

Consequently, this individual lives a life of poverty and hardship, never once experiencing the pleasure of a fine meal or any form of material abundance [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. This reality completely overturns natural expectations. When comparing a successful person to a suffering one, an observer might mistakenly assume that success is the reward of the righteous and suffering is the punishment of the wicked. Job's argument, however, points to a reality that is exactly the opposite [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast to this perspective, a completely different interpretation views this tragic figure not as a righteous person, but as the son of a wicked man. According to this approach, the son dies in bitterness as a direct result of his father's sins. This creates a double tragedy. The son is punished and endures deep suffering because of his father's actions, yet he never experienced any of the wealth or success that his father enjoyed. He bears the full weight of the consequences without ever tasting the fruits of his father's prosperity [אלשיך].
