איוב, פרק כ״א, פסוק י״ב

Job 21:12Sefaria

יִ֭שְׂאוּ כְּתֹ֣ף וְכִנּ֑וֹר וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ לְק֣וֹל עוּגָֽב׃

A life of absolute success and peace often peaks in sensory pleasure, marked by music and uncontainable joy. In such a carefree state, the blending of song and instruments creates an atmosphere of pure delight and refinement. The foundation of this joy is the raising of voices in song, which can include the sharing of poetic verses and parables [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this musical atmosphere might be entirely metaphorical. The sheer happiness of the moment causes people to sing out with such cheer that it feels as though drums and harps are physically playing around them [רלב״ג].

When actual music is present, slight variations in ancient manuscripts lead to different ways of understanding the relationship between the singers and their instruments [מנחת שי]. Some explain that the vocal singing is accompanied by physical drums and harps [רש״י, אבן עזרא]. Others suggest that the human voice itself is so powerful and rhythmic that it sounds exactly like a drum, with the drum serving as a symbol for all musical instruments [רמב״ן]. The specific combination of these sounds is highly intentional. A drum produces a high pitch, while a harp produces a low pitch. This vast gap in sound prevents them from blending beautifully on their own. True musical harmony is only achieved with the addition of the flute, an instrument with a medium pitch. The flute bridges the extremes of the drum and the harp, merging all three sounds into a perfect, pleasing melody. This appreciation for musical precision is so deeply ingrained that even young infants can recognize and delight in the harmony [אלשיך].

While this music primarily represents sensory delight [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון], the presence of the flute can also point to a deeper sense of disrespect and frivolity. The root of the instrument's name hints at laughter, lust, and loose behavior [רש״י]. Taking this a step further, the joy experienced at the sound of the flute can carry an undertone of mockery. Traditionally, the specific sound of this instrument is meant to stir anxiety and remind a person of their mortality. Yet, those lost in their success laugh at the music. They sing with absolute confidence that their lives will remain entirely good, believing they will eventually pass away in a single, sudden moment without ever experiencing sickness or suffering [מלבי״ם].
