Job 21:30Sefaria

A central question surrounding the lives of those who do wrong is whether they truly escape the consequences of their actions, or if their downfall is simply waiting for the right moment. At times, it appears that disaster and deep darkness are completely withheld from the wicked, prompting different understandings of their ultimate fate.

One perspective suggests that this reflects a temporary immunity in the present world. When widespread trouble strikes, the wicked person somehow manages to avoid it. Even during times of intense anger and judgment, tragedy seems to skip over him entirely. This apparent invincibility is exactly what gives him the boldness to harden his heart and live without fear of consequence

However, another view offers a stark contrast, viewing this current safety not as a true escape, but as a deliberate delay. The disaster meant for the wicked is merely hidden and stored away He is kept safe right now only to be preserved for an appointed day of ruin. When that destined day of wrath finally arrives, the accumulated punishments and vengeance will be unleashed with full force The nature of this reckoning varies. It might occur on the day of death, ensuring the person faces justice in the afterlife [מלבי״ם], or it could be a future tragedy so severe that even his children are led to destruction [רמב״ן].

Taking a completely different direction, a third approach explores the possibility of personal transformation in the face of impending doom. Rather than focusing solely on punishment, this view suggests that when the day of trouble finally arrives, the wicked might actually stop their bad behavior, confess, and change their ways. Even if they wait until the very day of their death, the sudden realization and fear of what is to come may drive them to finally repent and return to God [אלשיך].
