איוב, פרק ל״א, פסוק ד׳

Job 31:4Sefaria

הֲלֹא־ה֭וּא יִרְאֶ֣ה דְרָכָ֑י וְֽכׇל־צְעָדַ֥י יִסְפּֽוֹר׃

In the midst of profound suffering, Job expresses absolute confidence in God's careful supervision over his life. Rather than blaming his pain on a lack of divine attention, he relies entirely on God's watchful eye as the ultimate proof of his innocence. He turns this deep faith into a direct challenge against his friends. If they truly believe that God observes human behavior, they must admit that God, who sees the hidden truths of the heart that they cannot grasp, knows Job is righteous [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, אלשיך].

Job highlights God's awareness by pointing to two distinct aspects of human life. The first aspect involves the general direction a person takes, as well as the inner journey of the soul, which includes private thoughts and hidden intentions. The second aspect focuses on the physical movements themselves [מצודת ציון]. These represent the actual deeds and the tiniest, most specific details of daily behavior [מלבי"ם, אלשיך, שטיינזלץ]. Job declares that God thoroughly examines both the broad, internal motives and the smallest, external actions.

The primary approach among commentators is that God conducts this careful examination to confirm that Job never lived a life of lies or associated with deceitful people. Because Job is certain that God counts every single movement he makes, he prays and hopes that God will weigh him fairly in the scales of justice, ultimately proving his complete innocence to the world [רש"י, רמב"ן]. On the other hand, a different perspective views this divine counting in an entirely positive light, focusing on reward. According to this view, God does not just evaluate a person's general actions; He counts every individual step in order to grant a reward for each one. This concept is compared to someone who intentionally takes a longer path to the synagogue simply to earn a greater spiritual reward for the extra effort [אלשיך].
