Job 31:6Sefaria

יִשְׁקְלֵ֥נִי בְמֹֽאזְנֵי־צֶ֑דֶק וְיֵדַ֥ע אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ תֻּמָּתִֽי׃

Expressing absolute certainty in his own righteousness and clean hands, Job asks to stand for a careful trial before God. He wants his actions placed on a scale so their true worth can be measured, knowing that he is a complete person and that everything he has achieved was obtained with perfect honesty.

The primary approach among commentators is that Job hopes God will place his good deeds on one side of the scale and his sins on the other. He is entirely confident that if he is judged fairly, his merits will easily tip the scale in his favor. Through this process, it will become perfectly clear that he is free from sin.

At the same time, there is a careful distinction in the exact type of judgment being requested. Job specifically asks to be evaluated by the standard scales of justice, which represent the normal legal measure of weighing good deeds against wrongdoings. He intentionally avoids asking to be weighed on the strict scales of absolute perfection. His fear is that if he is judged by the highest possible standard of flawlessness, he might be punished for even the slightest mistake. Therefore, he asks that the actual judgment be carried out using the standard measure of justice, while his ultimate perfection and integrity remain something that God simply knows and recognizes [אלשיך].
