Job 31:5Sefaria

Job stands firm in his claim of innocence before God, fully aware that God examines not only open actions but also hidden intentions. Offering his conduct up to a divine test, Job declares that he never lived his life with flattery or falsehood.

He first reflects on the idea of living a life tied to emptiness, deceit, or matters lacking true substance Commentators explore this behavior on several levels. Socially, Job questions whether he ever associated with deceitful people or tried to imitate them [מצודת דוד]. On the level of thought and speech, this represents a life spent engaging in empty, meaningless words [מלבי״ם]. Looking at the deepest layer of the heart, Job asserts that even his good deeds were pure. He never acted with ulterior motives, for the wrong reasons, or without a genuine internal desire to do good [אלשיך].

Moving from thoughts, intentions, and speech, the focus then shifts to physical steps and practical actions [מלבי״ם]. Job maintains that he never rushed toward a path of deceit, where a person acts wickedly while pretending to be righteous. The primary approach among commentators is that his denial refers to physical speed and haste However, an additional perspective suggests the concept also includes cautiously sensing or feeling one's way forward

Building on this, Job emphasizes the absolute purity of his eagerness. Even when he appeared to hurry to do a good deed, it was never a deceptive display meant merely to impress those around him with fake enthusiasm. He lived with the constant awareness that God looks directly at the conscience, and that all hidden motives are completely exposed before Him [אלשיך].
