Job 31:23Sefaria

כִּ֤י פַ֣חַד אֵ֭לַי אֵ֣יד אֵ֑ל וּ֝מִשְּׂאֵת֗וֹ לֹ֣א אוּכָֽל׃

Job reveals the deep, internal reasons why he consistently chose to act morally and refused to harm the vulnerable. His restraint did not come from a single emotion, but rather from a profound, dual sense of awe toward God.

The primary approach among commentators is that Job was driven by a fear of divine punishment. He stayed away from wrongdoing because he dreaded the ruin and disaster that God brings upon the wicked. However, another perspective suggests a deeper moral sensitivity. In this view, Job was not simply afraid of a standard punishment. Instead, he feared damaging the divine attribute of kindness. He realized that if the mere threat of disaster was the only thing stopping him from sinning, his restraint would be based on fear rather than a genuine moral choice [אלשיך].

Beyond this initial fear, Job experienced a profound awe of God's greatness and honor. This reverence includes a sense of dread at the sheer, overwhelming weight of God's presence [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Together, these two levels of reverence, fear of consequence and awe of divine majesty, create a complete picture of Job's inner life. Because of this intense respect and the awareness that God was constantly watching his actions, Job felt entirely incapable of committing an injustice. Even if there were no threat of punishment, his deep sense of shame and honor toward God would have prevented him from doing wrong [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, by recognizing God's ultimate majesty and His role as a father to the fatherless, Job understood the true nature of his actions. He realized that hurting a vulnerable person is equivalent to harming God's own child. With this profound understanding, he simply could not bring himself to lift a hand against the weak [אלשיך].
