איוב, פרק ל״א, פסוק ט״ו

Job 31:15Sefaria

הֲֽלֹא־בַ֭בֶּטֶן עֹשֵׂ֣נִי עָשָׂ֑הוּ וַ֝יְכֻנֶ֗נּוּ בָּרֶ֥חֶם אֶחָֽד׃

Job expresses a profound moral vision of human equality, recognizing that every person, regardless of social standing, shares the exact same origin and Creator. This realization forms the foundation of his absolute fairness toward his servants. He understands that he could never expect true justice from God if he were to ignore the cries of those who serve him, knowing they are entirely equal to him in their basic human essence [מלבי״ם].

The creation of a master and a servant happens in the exact same way [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This inherent equality applies to every phase of human development, from the early period of pregnancy through the moment of birth [מלבי״ם]. God carefully prepares and shapes both individuals alike, forming their physical bodies on the exact same pattern [מנחת שי]. Because God establishes the limbs of a servant just as He does for a master, their physical bodies hold the exact same value. Recognizing this equal worth, a master must be extremely careful never to cause physical harm to a servant, even in the heat of a dispute [אלשיך].

When considering this shared origin, commentators offer two distinct perspectives on how all people stem from a single source. The first approach explains that this oneness refers directly to the Creator. A single, unique God prepares and creates every individual, even though each person develops in their own mother's womb [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מנחת שי]. Alternatively, another perspective points to a shared physical root for all of humanity. In this view, every human being originates from one single womb: that of Eve, the mother of all living. Because everyone shares this identical ancestry, no person can claim a superior lineage, making all human beings true brothers [מצודת דוד, אלשיך].
