Job 31:16Sefaria

אִם־אֶ֭מְנַע מֵחֵ֣פֶץ דַּלִּ֑ים וְעֵינֵ֖י אַלְמָנָ֣ה אֲכַלֶּֽה׃

A person facing severe accusations of abandoning the most vulnerable members of society must look back at their life to prove their character. Job offers a fierce moral defense of his actions toward the weak, declaring that he never ignored their pain or caused them despair. Responding to claims that he oppressed or neglected the poor, he insists that he never stole from anyone, nor did he ever refuse a plea for help [מלבי״ם]. Providing basic needs like food and clothing was not a burden to him, as the trait of kindness had been deeply ingrained in his nature since his youth [תקות אנוש].

He asks rhetorically if he ever denied the destitute their needs or desires [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Job also addresses the emotional toll of poverty, specifically the feeling of intense longing when help does not arrive. Commentators describe this deep disappointment as a physical exhaustion, a state where a person's eyes fail from desperately expecting relief that they cannot obtain [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that Job wonders if any widow ever looked to him for rescue, only to be let down and left waiting in vain [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests an even more severe scenario, with Job asking if he ever actually robbed a widow, causing her to weep and long for the property taken from her [אבן עזרא].

This dedication went beyond simply giving; it required navigating the practical and moral dilemmas of charity. If Job was approached by destitute individuals and a widow at the exact same time, he knew how to prioritize correctly. He would ask the others to wait briefly, merely delaying their help without denying it, so he could immediately attend to the widow and spare her the agony of waiting [אלשיך].

His generosity was always pure and driven by a higher purpose. Even in situations where he had the legal right to demand repayment for the food and assistance he provided, he gave everything as an absolute gift and never asked for his money back [חומת אנך]. Ultimately, this profound generosity was rooted in a clear realization: if he selfishly kept his food for himself and ignored those in need, he would have no defense on the day he would stand trial before God [רמב״ן].
