תִּטְחַ֣ן לְאַחֵ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֑י וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ יִכְרְע֥וּן אֲחֵרִֽין׃

Job declares a devastating curse upon his own household as the ultimate penalty if he ever harbored inappropriate thoughts or engaged in illicit acts with a married woman. He envisions a tragic and cruel destiny for his own wife as the consequence of his hypothetical betrayal.

The primary approach among commentators is that the imagery of his wife grinding grain serves as a metaphor for intimate relations [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רמב״ן]. This comparison stems from the physical motion of a millstone, where the upper stone moves rhythmically over the lower one. In this scenario, his wife would be handed over to another person, subjected to lewdness, and treated with the deep disrespect and abandon typically forced upon a servant [רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this labor is understood quite literally as a life of extreme poverty [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. In this view, the punishment means his wife would become a widow, forced into the grueling manual labor of working a millstone for a stranger just to keep herself alive.

Her desperate situation naturally leads to further abuse. The subsequent imagery of men kneeling over her represents a descent into sexual exploitation [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Following the view that her initial fate is extreme poverty, her complete financial ruin and desperate need to survive make her deeply vulnerable. This weakness allows strange men to easily exploit, seduce, or assault her [מצודת דוד].

A unique spiritual perspective notes a subtle shift in the grammar of the text, suggesting a profound hint regarding the nature of the punishment [אלשיך]. Rather than a fully realized physical violation, this change indicates a spiritual stumbling. Because Job only experienced temptation in his heart toward another woman and never actually committed a physical sin, the consequence operates measure for measure. Strange men will be deeply tempted by his wife, falling into spiritual ruin due to their corrupt thoughts and intentions, but they will never actually touch her. His partial offense of the mind results in a similarly partial consequence directed at his wife.
