איוב, פרק ל״ח, פסוק י״ז

Job 38:17Sefaria

הֲנִגְל֣וּ לְ֭ךָ שַׁעֲרֵי־מָ֑וֶת וְשַׁעֲרֵ֖י צַלְמָ֣וֶת תִּרְאֶֽה׃

The mystery of human mortality and the limits of human comprehension stand at the center of God's rebuke. God presents a rhetorical challenge regarding the most hidden reality, questioning whether a human being has managed to decode the secret of death [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This challenge addresses the immense difficulty of understanding how the soul separates from the body. It is a profound intellectual mystery, just as incomprehensible as how the soul and body are initially joined together. The ability to witness these events does not refer to physical sight, but rather to a deep mental grasp and profound knowledge [תקות אנוש].

The concepts of the gates of death and the shadow of death represent several ideas. One approach views these expressions simply as a reference to the grave, using a repetition of ideas for emphasis [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. In contrast, others understand this on a spiritual level, referring to Hell and its various compartments [רש"י, רמב"ן]. Beyond a physical or spiritual location, these thresholds also serve as a metaphor for knowing the actual condition of the dead [רמב"ן]. Furthermore, God's challenge serves to dismantle an earlier assumption made by Job, who believed that the dead would never return to life [מצודת דוד].

Another perspective connects these boundaries to the ultimate sense of nothingness and cessation, representing the point where exploring the abyss reaches absolute zero [רמב"ן]. From a completely different angle, these gates represent the destructive forces of nature concealed deep within the earth and the sea. According to this view, they symbolize the hidden origins of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and natural disasters, which God uses to punish the wicked [מלבי"ם].

Finally, this divine challenge is a direct response to a previous complaint, where Job lamented his inevitable journey to a land of darkness and the shadow of death. God confronts this presumption by presenting a conceptual escalation. He asks whether the initial threshold of death has even been revealed to him, challenging how he could possibly claim to comprehend the even deeper mystery of the shadow of death [אלשיך].
