Job 38:12Sefaria

הֲֽ֭מִיָּמֶיךָ צִוִּ֣יתָ בֹּ֑קֶר (ידעתה שחר) [יִדַּ֖עְתָּ הַשַּׁ֣חַר] מְקֹמֽוֹ׃

Speaking from the heart of a storm, God challenges human understanding by pointing to the daily miracle of the sunrise. The core question presented to a mortal is whether he possesses the power to control the appearance of light or dictate the exact spot where the first sunbeams will break through to chase away the night. Since the day a person is born, he has never once commanded the morning to appear or instructed the dawn on where to take its place [רש"י, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי"ם, אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the natural cycles of the sky. God asks if a human can order the sun to shine daily, as the sun moves constantly and humbly, completely obedient to the decree of the Creator [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the location of the dawn is never fixed. Each day, the sun rises from a slightly different point, shifting gradually from north to south and back again. This carefully calculated movement creates the seasons and ensures that life can exist on earth [רלב"ג, רמב"ן]. Another perspective traces this idea back to the days of creation. The command to the morning refers to the very first light that appeared on the first day. Assigning the dawn its place refers to the fourth day, when the sun was set into its exact orbit. From that moment, it constantly circles the globe, changing its position at every given moment [מלבי"ם].

Beyond the physical laws of nature, the sunrise holds a moral and allegorical message that directly answers complaints about the suffering of good people. On a moral level, the appearance of dawn over inhabited lands is meant to illuminate the corners of the earth and purge the wicked from the world every single day [אבן עזרא, תקות אנוש]. On a deeper level, the progression of light explains the very purpose of suffering. The dim dawn, representing the relative darkness before full light, symbolizes the hardships that righteous people experience in this world. In contrast, the bright morning symbolizes the life of the World to Come and the resurrection of the dead. God explains that just as the dark dawn is a necessary step before the morning, the suffering of the righteous in this world is a necessary cleansing. It purifies a person from sin so they can receive the eternal light that will shine for them in the World to Come like a clear morning, without needing to endure the punishments of hell [אלשיך].
