איוב, פרק ל״ח, פסוק ל״ג

Job 38:33Sefaria

הֲ֭יָדַעְתָּ חֻקּ֣וֹת שָׁמָ֑יִם אִם־תָּשִׂ֖ים מִשְׁטָר֣וֹ בָאָֽרֶץ׃

Looking up at the night sky, one might see a silent, distant display of stars. Yet, a profound and active connection exists between these celestial bodies and the physical events on earth. God challenges Job, asking if he possesses the knowledge and power to understand or manage the complex laws of the universe and their direct influence on the world below.

The fixed rules governing the stars and constellations were established by God at the dawn of creation. These are absolute, unbreakable laws that direct the heavenly host ([אבן עזרא], [רמב״ן], [מלבי״ם], [תקוות אנוש]). Part of this grand design includes the constant, unending orbits of the celestial bodies ([אלשיך]).

This heavenly system does not simply exist in isolation; it exercises authority over the earth. The concept of this cosmic rule is similar to the role of a city officer who maintains order and manages civic affairs ([מצודת ציון], [רלב״ג], [אבן עזרא]). In the same way, the stars and constellations are granted the authority to govern and act upon the lower world ([תקוות אנוש], [מלבי״ם]).

The influence of the heavens upon the earth operates on multiple levels. In the natural world, the constellations are responsible for the climate, bringing cold and heat, guiding the changing seasons, and causing trees and plants to grow ([רש״י], [רמב״ן]). Beyond nature, the heavenly host also plays a role in human destiny. They act as agents of judgment, decreeing human events such as who will experience war, famine, or peace ([מצודת דוד]).

To understand the depth of this connection, commentators note the tradition that every single blade of grass on earth has a specific star above it. This star strikes the plant and commands it to grow, bringing its hidden potential into reality ([תקוות אנוש], [אלשיך]). Building on this, [אלשיך] introduces a deeper layer of faith. Because the celestial bodies are in constant motion, a star is never permanently positioned directly above its corresponding blade of grass. This constant movement proves that the growth of plants and the influence of the stars are not the result of blind, automatic nature. Instead, they operate through direct, complete, and purposeful Divine supervision. God ultimately challenges Job to consider whether any human could ever establish such a precise, perfectly supervised system of governance on earth.
