איוב, פרק ל״ח, פסוק כ״ט

Job 38:29Sefaria

מִבֶּ֣טֶן מִ֭י יָצָ֣א הַקָּ֑רַח וּכְפֹ֥ר שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם מִ֣י יְלָדֽוֹ׃

God's providence over creation reveals itself through His absolute command over the natural world and the hidden mysteries of the universe. Reflecting on the origins of freezing weather awakens a profound sense of wonder regarding the source of these forces and the true extent of Divine control over them.

On a physical level, the focus is on clear natural phenomena. When water turns into a solid, frozen surface due to extreme cold [מצודת ציון], it prompts a reflection on who actually commands the liquid to undergo this rigid transformation [מצודת דוד]. Similarly, the morning frost, whether understood as shards of frozen dew scattered at dawn [מצודת ציון] or as falling hail [רש״י], inspires a search for its creator. This inquiry seeks to uncover who ordered the frost to descend from the sky to the earth [מצודת דוד].

Beyond the natural weather patterns, a deeper perspective views these elements as a metaphor for God's guidance over both the spiritual and earthly realms. It highlights His unique ability to transform physical matter into spirit, and spiritual energy into physical matter. In this approach, the ice symbolizes the angel Metatron, who originally began as a human being named Enoch. Though he was born from a physical woman, he was elevated by God to become a supreme spiritual entity. In contrast, the heavenly frost represents the Manna that fell for the Israelites in the desert. The Manna started as a purely spiritual abundance, but God brought it down and transformed it into tangible, physical food for human beings. This contrast perfectly illustrates God's absolute mastery over all realms of existence, demonstrating how He elevates the lower, physical world upward while bringing the higher, spiritual world downward [אלשיך].
