איוב, פרק ל״ח, פסוק כ״ב

Job 38:22Sefaria

הֲ֭בָאתָ אֶל־אֹצְר֣וֹת שָׁ֑לֶג וְאוֹצְר֖וֹת בָּרָ֣ד תִּרְאֶֽה׃

After outlining the general order of creation, God shifts His focus to specific natural phenomena. He presents questions meant to highlight the limits of human understanding in the face of creation [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. The places where snow and hail are held act as natural treasuries [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These hazards do not fall upon the earth constantly. Because they are formed from the four elements and serve specific purposes, they are kept waiting for defined times, much like objects protected in a vault [תקות אנוש].

Commentators offer different views on the nature and location of these storehouses. One approach explains them geographically, suggesting that the reserves of snow are massive mountains capped with eternal snow, along with deep underground ice caves in remote areas. In this view, the reserves of hail are located high in the atmosphere, in freezing zones completely hidden from human eyes [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views these locations as existing in a more heavenly dimension, placing the origins of snow in the sixth firmament and describing hail as solidifying in the air [אלשיך].

The challenge God presents regarding entering and seeing these places is not about physical travel or simply looking from a distance [אלשיך]. Rather, it is a profound test of mental comprehension. God asks if human intellect can truly dig deep enough to understand exactly where these elements originate and how they operate [מצודת דוד].

Beyond their mere existence, there is a specific purpose for storing these natural hazards. God keeps them in reserve to be unleashed during times of crisis and days of war. They serve as instruments of punishment against a sinful land, capable of destroying its crops, or act as actual weapons on the battlefield, just as God once brought down massive hailstones upon the five Canaanite kings [רמב״ן]. However, while these stored forces are meant for various historical and future conflicts among nations, this does not serve as a prophecy about the war of Gog and Magog. Because Job was not among the Israelites, he did not prophesy about that specific event [רמב״ן].
