A sense of deep despair can sometimes lead people to question the value of faith and obedience. When observing the world, a painful conclusion emerges for some: keeping God's commandments seems to bring no benefit and might even cause harm. This profound frustration stems directly from witnessing the ongoing success of the wicked, resulting in complaints that are difficult for God to hear [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Overwhelmed by this reality, people feel forced to praise the arrogant who make no effort to serve God. They look at these wrongdoers and declare them to be the truly happy and fortunate ones [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. This praise goes beyond mere words; it actively strengthens and validates the lifestyle of those who do wrong [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The wicked appear to enjoy a double reward. First, they are firmly established and flourish in life, much like a strong, newly constructed building [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They succeed, prosper, and raise families without suffering any loss or consequence for their evil actions [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

Second, their behavior goes beyond mere apathy. They do not just happen to sin; they sin intentionally as a direct test of God [מצודת ציון]. They deliberately commit wrongs to see if God is truly capable of punishing them for their actions [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. The deeply frustrating result for those watching is that these wrongdoers completely escape any negative consequences. They avoid disaster, never stumble, and seemingly prove to the world that it is entirely possible to rebel against God and walk away completely unharmed [רש״י, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
