Malachi 3:3Sefaria

On the future Day of Judgment, a profound process of spiritual cleansing will unfold, mirroring the careful work of a metal refiner. The focus of this purification is to cleanse the spiritual leadership of its corruption, allowing them to serve God with true devotion. The nature of this divine action is deliberate and focused. It can be understood as God sitting in the seat of a judge, carefully evaluating the people to separate the innocent from the guilty Alternatively, this posture represents absolute dedication. It is as if God sets aside all other matters to focus entirely on the task of purification, much like a craftsman completely absorbed in his work [רש״י].

The process itself involves separating the waste from the precious metal, which symbolizes the removal of the wicked from the nation and the cleansing of sins Following this initial separation, a more advanced and rigorous stage of purification takes place, achieving a level of cleanliness that is only possible after the first layer of impurities is removed

The comparison to gold and silver reveals that there will be different degrees of purification. Because gold is more valuable than silver, it requires a stricter cleaning process. In the same way, the priests, who serve in the inner sanctum, will undergo a far more rigorous and precise spiritual refinement than the rest of the Levite tribe [מלבי״ם].

The prophet specifically highlights the priests because of their corrupt actions during that generation, when they offered blemished animals, presented defiled food, and showed disrespect for the name of God. The coming refinement guarantees that only priests who are entirely free from sin will remain Ultimately, the purpose of this intense cleansing is to ensure that future sacrifices are presented properly, lawfully, and with true integrity These offerings will be accompanied by genuine good deeds between man and God [מלבי״ם]. This restored state will stand in complete contrast to the flawed practices of the past, ensuring that only those who have maintained their righteousness will earn the right to approach the altar
