Malachi 3:13Sefaria

A deep crisis of faith sets the stage for a sharp confrontation between God and the people. Observing the peaceful lives of wicked individuals, the people of that generation reach a troubling conclusion. They decide that the world runs entirely on its own, without Divine supervision, and that there is no ultimate judge or justice Emboldened by this belief, the wicked openly mock the prophet's earlier warnings about their sins, such as marrying foreign women and failing to give tithes [אברבנאל]. While this exchange addresses their current spiritual decline, another perspective suggests that the prophecy also looks to the future, serving as a prelude to the coming Day of Judgment [אבן עזרא].

God confronts the people, pointing out that their complaints against Him are harsh, fierce, and relentless Even though the prophet has already answered their previous claims, they stubbornly refuse to accept the truth. Instead, they intensify their arguments, continuously trying to contradict God [מלבי״ם].

In response to this heavy rebuke, the people feign innocence. They deny their actions entirely, asking God what harsh things they could have possibly said against Him The specific way they phrase their denial reveals the depth of their rebellion. On one level, it highlights the sheer persistence of their complaints, showing that they spoke against God constantly and without pause [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. On another level, their response resembles the reaction of people accused of whispering secrets in the dark, demanding to know who gossiped about them. This exposes a profound foolishness, as they behave as though God is unaware of their hidden thoughts and private conversations unless a human informant reports them to Him [אברבנאל].
