Malachi 3:17Sefaria

A time is coming when divine justice will be fully revealed, making the profound difference between the righteous and the wicked undeniable. In that future era of judgment and redemption, those who hold a deep reverence for God will experience special protection and receive an eternal reward that has been carefully set aside for them.

At the heart of this promise is the concept of a precious treasure There are two main perspectives on what this treasure represents. One approach suggests that the treasure refers to the people themselves. When God executes justice and punishes the wicked, those who fear Him will be kept as His own treasured nation and a source of delight This chosen group spans across time, including both the righteous of the current generation who will return during the resurrection of the dead, as well as the faithful of future generations [רד״ק]. Alternatively, another perspective views the treasure as the reward itself or the impending day of judgment. In this view, God actively gathers and treasures the good deeds and words of humanity, preparing a specific day of reckoning where He will distribute the exact and proper reward

During this time of judgment, God will treat His followers with deep mercy [מצודת ציון], shielding them so that the destruction sweeping away the wicked does not touch them [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This divine compassion is compared to the love a father has for a son who works for him. While a father naturally cares for all his children, his affection grows significantly stronger for a son who is deeply dedicated and careful in his service Such devotion reflects a profound closeness, driven by the love of children who simply want to bring joy to their father [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This relationship between a father and a devoted son offers a deeper insight into how the ultimate reward is delivered. A standard worker expects to be paid immediately for their labor. However, a son who serves his father out of love does not demand payment right away. In return for this selfless dedication, the father builds an enduring treasure to be kept for generations. In the same way, those who serve God out of pure love do not look for their compensation in this temporary, passing world. Instead, God safely stores their reward for the future, ensuring that in the eternal world, they will receive an infinite and lasting return [מלבי״ם].
