The downfall of Nineveh is rooted not only in its brutal military force but also in its highly deceptive political and economic tactics. Alongside its raw cruelty, the Assyrian empire operated with deep cunning, using manipulation to trap surrounding nations. The empire functioned much like a captivating woman who uses her charms to lure in unsuspecting victims. The coming destruction of the city is a direct result of this abundant deceit and the many evils it committed [רד״ק]. Specifically, Assyria relied heavily on flattery and fraud to mislead neighboring lands [רש״י, אבן עזרא].

Assyria would entice foreign kings into forming false alliances. Once these nations were fully taken in and convinced to reveal their vulnerabilities and secrets, the empire would turn on them. It conquered and slaughtered these former allies, leaving them with absolutely no way to escape [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. The massive wealth and booming commerce of the city served as the ultimate bait, drawing people in just as a bribe or payment might [מלבי״ם].

Using every tool at its disposal, the empire effectively traded and enslaved entire populations through these seductive methods [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. However, a distinction exists in how different groups were captured. While ordinary nations easily fell prey to the standard allure of wealth and false promises, more distinguished and prominent families required a different approach. Because these important groups were not easily swayed by basic temptations, the empire employed highly sophisticated, extraordinary illusions to blind their judgment. Through these advanced deceptions, even the most elite and cautious leaders were ultimately ensnared and enslaved [מלבי״ם].
