Nahum 3:16Sefaria

A prosperous capital city, once a global commercial hub, faces a sudden and complete collapse. The sharp transition from economic glory to total abandonment reveals the futility of wealth and financial alliances during a time of crisis. During its era of peace, the city attracted massive numbers of merchants [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא], including small traders who carried their wares from house to house [מלבי״ם]. The city multiplied its merchants until their numbers, wealth, and honor surpassed the stars in the sky

The sudden shift in the city's fate is captured through the imagery of a locust swarm. On one hand, this imagery reflects the commercial agility of the city during its golden age. Just as a young locust quickly spreads its wings and takes flight, the merchants were swift to travel and distribute their goods across the globe

Conversely, the primary approach among commentators views the insect swarm as a metaphor for betrayal and abandonment during a disaster. When the day of reckoning arrived, the vast wealth and sheer number of merchants provided no salvation. Like a swarm of locusts that strips a field bare and then suddenly flies away without a trace, the merchants fled for their lives or were taken captive, leaving the ruined city behind

A unique perspective builds on the biological development of the insect to explain this mass exodus. Initially, the merchants operated like crawling locusts, scurrying from place to place strictly within the country's borders. However, as the crisis erupted, the insect shed its outer shell and grew wings. In the same way, the merchants shed their local ties, took flight, and escaped to foreign lands, abandoning the city entirely [מלבי״ם].
