משלי, פרק ז׳, פסוק ט״ו

Proverbs 7:15Sefaria

עַל־כֵּ֭ן יָצָ֣אתִי לִקְרָאתֶ֑ךָ לְשַׁחֵ֥ר פָּ֝נֶ֗יךָ וָאֶמְצָאֶֽךָּ׃

The art of temptation relies heavily on making a target feel uniquely chosen while carefully hiding true intentions. Building upon a seemingly innocent excuse, the seductress claims she has just brought peace offerings. As a result, she has an abundance of sacrificial meat and is simply looking for someone to share the meal with [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

By framing her invitation around a religious duty, she attempts to remove any suspicion. She wants to convince the young man that she is not a loose woman chasing after random passersby. Instead, she insists that she sought him out personally because he caught her eye. She presents her request as a practical need for his company to help consume the holy sacrifice, completely masking her true physical desires [אלשיך].

Her audacity becomes clear as she spins her story. She claims that their meeting was not a chance encounter after spotting him in the street. Rather, she purposely left her home with the specific goal of seeking him out [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], beginning her search even before she knew he would be walking her way [מלבי״ם]. Commentators view her declaration of finding him from two slightly different angles. She is either emphasizing that the entire purpose of her journey was solely to find him [רש״י], or she is joyfully celebrating the successful result of her hunt, thrilled that she actually found the exact person she desired [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

On a deeper level, these lies and flatteries serve as a metaphor for internal spiritual struggles. The seductress perfectly mirrors the methods of the evil inclination. Just as she uses calculated excuses to lure the young man, the evil inclination introduces harmful thoughts to trip up a person's good intentions, slowly swaying the heart to abandon its morals and chase after physical desires [אמרי דעת].
