Proverbs 7:3Sefaria

קׇשְׁרֵ֥ם עַל־אֶצְבְּעֹתֶ֑יךָ כׇּ֝תְבֵ֗ם עַל־ל֥וּחַ לִבֶּֽךָ׃

True wisdom requires a seamless connection between what a person thinks and what they actually do. A life guided by divine instruction must integrate these teachings into both the physical reality of daily routines and the internal world of intentions. This harmony between internal planning and external execution ensures that a person operates with complete wholeness.

To keep these teachings present, they must serve as a constant reminder. Just as a person might tie a piece of jewelry, a seal, or a string around a finger to remember something important, divine wisdom should always be kept in plain sight [ביאור שטיינזלץ], [עמנואל הרומי]. Beyond a simple memory aid, the primary approach among commentators is that the fingers symbolize practical deeds. Every action a person performs should be guided by the path of the Torah. This idea extends to weaving the Commandments directly into ordinary life. Every daily task can be tied to a specific Commandment. For example, a farmer works the land while carefully avoiding forbidden agricultural mixtures and leaving leftover crops for the poor. Similarly, a merchant conducts business with the clear intention of setting aside a portion of the profits for charity. In this way, everyday work is constantly accompanied by the fulfillment of God's word [אלשיך].

This physical practice is completed by an internal commitment, ensuring these teachings are deeply etched into memory so they are never forgotten [אבן עזרא]. The heart is the center of human thought, the place where a person reflects, plans, and visualizes actions long before carrying them out with their hands [רלב״ג], [אמרי דעת]. As the ruling force of the soul, the heart can be turbulent. Yet, when words of wisdom are firmly engraved upon it, much like the original Tablets of the Covenant, they have the power to calm and restrain the storm of human desires [מלבי״ם]. The mind acts as a filter for the heart, carefully testing and sorting through various thoughts. When a person's intellect is saturated with God's Commandments, the heart simply cannot hold onto negative ideas. As a result, all internal plans and desires naturally align with serving Heaven [אלשיך].
