Wisdom is personified as a gracious host preparing a lavish royal banquet, waiting to welcome anyone who seeks it. This vivid imagery of a feast illustrates how readily available wisdom is and the rich spiritual abundance it offers. The preparation unfolds in distinct stages. First, the meat is carefully slaughtered and cooked to perfection [אבן עזרא]. Next, strong wine is mixed and diluted with water, making it pleasant and ready to drink [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון]. Finally, the table is fully set, arranged with every variety of wet and dry food [רש״י, מצודת ציון], waiting perfectly prepared for the invited guests [שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד].
The primary approach among commentators is that this grand, open feast serves as a metaphor for the pursuit of wisdom and the Torah. Unlike physical property that must be bought at a high price, wisdom is laid out like a crown on a fully set table, offered freely to anyone with an open heart and a natural desire to understand [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת, רלב״ג].
The specific elements of the meal represent different layers of the human mind and spirit [מלבי״ם]. The meat and rich food symbolize words of wisdom that nourish the heart, giving a person the stability to withstand the storms of the evil inclination. The mixed wine represents understanding, which brings joy to the heart, lifts the spirit, and gives a person the ability to deduce new insights from existing knowledge. The table, set with every kind of delicacy, points to the trait of deep knowledge, encompassing all the different types of information in the world.
Alongside the literal and moral interpretations, a unique Midrashic tradition reads the preparation of this feast as a hidden reference to the creation of the world and the first human [אלשיך]. In this view, the slaughtering of the meat hints at God striking down two groups of ministering angels who actively opposed the creation of humanity. The mixing of the wine represents God softening His attribute of strict justice, diluting it with mercy so the world could survive despite humanity's evil inclination. Finally, the arranged table refers to God creating all the animals, beasts, and fish before He even consulted the angels. He prepared the entire world in advance for humanity, just like a beautifully set table waiting for its diners to arrive.
