תהלים, פרק קמ״ד, פסוק ט״ו

Psalms 144:15Sefaria

אַשְׁרֵ֣י הָ֭עָם שֶׁכָּ֣כָה לּ֑וֹ אַֽשְׁרֵ֥י הָ֝עָ֗ם שֱׁיְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ {פ}

The ultimate aspiration of human existence is reaching a state of perfect harmony, where material prosperity and a close spiritual bond with God are deeply intertwined. The highest praise is directed toward a nation that achieves this rare combination [מצודת ציון]. Such praise highlights an ideal reality where a people enjoys a genuinely good life, characterized by peace, abundance, and overwhelming goodness [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This state of joy exists on two distinct levels. The first level reflects physical success and earthly blessings, such as thriving children, overflowing storehouses, and secure borders. A nation granted such immense goodness is certainly in a praiseworthy state [אלשיך, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Yet, a deeper layer reveals a much higher degree of happiness. True joy does not stem merely from the material wealth of this world, but from the spiritual integrity and righteousness of the people. It is this moral uprightness that allows them to forge a unique relationship with God [אלשיך].

In truth, the vast material success is a direct result of this spiritual connection. Abundance flows because God dwells among the people, utilizing His limitless power to bestow great goodness as a reward for their actions [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Looking toward the future, this represents an ideal state of perfection. When the time comes that reality is sweetened and the earth is filled with the knowledge of God, the nation itself will recognize its perfect state and celebrate its physical blessings. At the same time, the surrounding nations will look on from the outside and praise the people specifically for their profound, enduring relationship with God [מאירי].
