Psalms 20:8Sefaria

In times of war, the battlefield becomes a stage for a profound clash of worldviews rather than just a physical fight between armies. The conflict ultimately tests the true source of a nation's power and security.

The opposing forces arrive equipped with the most advanced and formidable weapons of the ancient world. Chariots provide the unstoppable force of iron, while horses offer unmatched speed and physical strength The primary approach among commentators notes that the nations of the world place their absolute trust in this material and military might In stark contrast, the Israelites face a severe military disadvantage. They march into battle with few weapons, forced to fight on foot against a highly sophisticated war machine

Recognizing their physical vulnerability, the Israelites shift their reliance entirely to the spiritual realm, depending solely on calling upon God. One perspective even argues that understanding salvation as a purely supernatural event removes the need for military preparation altogether [מלבי״ם]. This act of invoking God is largely understood as crying out in prayer for Divine assistance amidst the chaos and noise of combat Another interpretation links this action directly to the Temple service, suggesting it reflects the burning of incense and the bringing of a memorial sacrifice [רש״י].

While the specific phrasing of calling upon God can be viewed simply as a poetic flourish [אבן עזרא], it also holds a deeper spiritual significance. When the people achieve a high level of righteousness, they become intimately associated with God. Because they exist within the Divine presence, merely mentioning God is enough to awaken His mercy and secure their rescue [אלשיך].

The conclusion of this ideological and physical clash is decisive. Those who place their confidence in physical weapons will ultimately collapse and fall. Conversely, those who lean entirely on God will not only secure victory and rise up, but will also experience lasting success and prosperity after the battle
