The bond between a child and their parents is widely considered the most powerful and natural connection in human experience. Yet, even this profound relationship is ultimately limited and temporary when compared to the constant, unwavering care of God. Recognizing this reality leads to a deep sense of absolute dependence on Him. Even in moments of total isolation or abandonment, God remains a secure shelter for anyone left behind by human hands [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When human guardians are gone, God steps in to gather the abandoned individual into His embrace, carefully providing for every physical and emotional need [מצודת דוד].
This separation from parents and the subsequent divine intervention occurs across various stages of human life, beginning at the very moment of creation. At conception, parents are driven by their own physical desires and soon part ways. In that hidden moment, it is God who gathers the seed, protecting it and shaping it into a living child [רש"י]. Furthermore, while parents provide the physical body, they are completely powerless to save their child if a decree of death is issued. In such times, it is God who gathers years of life from various sources and gifts them to the individual [אלשיך].
As life progresses, this separation takes on different forms. Sometimes, it is simply a natural stage of maturity. When a person grows up and steps out from under their parents' authority, or when parents are no longer capable of providing for their child's needs, God takes over, supplying their livelihood and treating them with honor [רד"ק, המאירי, מצודת דוד]. In other cases, the separation is forced by the tragedy of death. The parents who brought the child into the world eventually pass away, but God's protection remains an ongoing, continuous reality that never ceases [אבן עזרא].
Through these life experiences, a person might feel like an orphan left entirely alone in the world. However, God responds with deep compassion, taking the orphaned soul into His own home and raising them with care [מלבי"ם]. Understanding that God is the sole Creator and ultimate provider who has sustained a person through every stage of life leads to a natural conclusion: it is only fitting to turn to Him, asking that He continue to guide the way and watch over them forever [רד"ק, מלבי"ם].
