תהלים, פרק כ״ז, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 27:2Sefaria

True trust in God is ultimately tested when danger is no longer a distant possibility, but an immediate, physical reality. In the face of an attack, complete faith transforms fear into an absolute certainty of victory and the collapse of the aggressors. As enemies draw near, this movement represents a direct physical advance [אבן עזרא], an approach specifically geared for battle [רד״ק, אבן עזרא], or a secret gathering of wicked individuals conspiring together to plot harm [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their focus is deeply personal, targeting the individual directly and intentionally [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

The attackers are driven by different motivations. Some act out of a desire for personal gain and profit, akin to robbers seeking to devour their prey, while others are fueled by a burning hatred and a thirst for revenge [מלבי״ם]. These are not random threats, but specific, known individuals [אבן עזרא] who are entirely resolute in their malicious plans and have no intention of retreating on their own [מצודת דוד].

The brutal intent of these enemies to consume the flesh of their victim carries profound implications. On one level, this highlights that the threat is purely physical; the attackers can only inflict bodily harm but remain completely powerless to damage the soul [אלשיך]. On a mystical level, this desire to consume flesh hints at death and the grave. According to these teachings, only after a person's physical body decays in the earth are their bones exposed, upon which their merits and sins are engraved. The enemies actively hope for this decay so that the victim's hidden sins will be revealed and brought to harsh judgment [חומת אנך].

While the attackers approach specifically to cause the victim to stumble and suffer harm [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], a person armed with profound faith perceives the situation entirely differently. Rather than feeling targeted, the faithful person views the approaching enemies as already belonging to him, entirely under his control even before the conflict begins. As they draw close, they are already considered delivered into his hands [מאירי]. Spiritually, this reflects the power of repentance motivated by love, which transforms past sins into merits. The very destructive forces that were originally created by a person's sins are transformed into his own personal advocates and defenders [אלשיך].

Ultimately, the resolution of this confrontation is absolute. The downfall of the attackers requires no physical effort or combat from the one being attacked. Instead, the wicked trip over their own malicious plots and collapse entirely on their own, solely through God's intervention and protection [מלבי״ם, מאירי, מצודת דוד]. Because God does not permit those exercising free will to harm someone who has been purified of their sins, the wicked inevitably crumble under the crushing weight of their own impending punishment [אלשיך].
