Psalms 4:3Sefaria

David confronts his opponents, delivering a sharp rebuke against their stubborn attempts to tear down his standing and subject him to public disgrace. He directs his words toward individuals of high social standing and influence, such as ministers and prominent leaders Some identify these men specifically as the leaders who joined Absalom in his rebellion, actively seeking to overthrow David's rule Alternatively, this address is aimed at the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob [רש״י]. Regardless of their noble lineage, the malicious actions of these pursuers make them the exact opposite of godly people [מלבי״ם].

David questions how long these enemies will invest such intense effort into twisting his royal honor into a source of shame There is a deep irony in their behavior. As men of importance, they should naturally understand how to show respect to those who deserve it, yet they deliberately choose to degrade his kingship They express this disrespect by refusing to even speak his name, referring to him mockingly only as the son of Jesse [רש״י]. From another perspective, the shame David experiences comes from public perception. Observers witness his ongoing suffering and mistakenly conclude that he must be a wicked man receiving punishment for his sins [אלשיך]. Yet, even as these adversaries work tirelessly to humiliate him, God continuously works to uphold his honor [מלבי״ם].

The campaign against David is driven by a pursuit of nonsense and baseless accusations [שטיינזלץ]. During the rebellion, his enemies chased an impossible fantasy, believing they could strip him of his kingship. Their efforts are built on a temporary illusion that is destined to fail and dry up, much like a seasonal river [רד״ק, המאירי]. In other instances of persecution, these enemies act with pure deceit, much like those who presented a friendly face to David while secretly slandering him to King Saul [רש״י]. Ultimately, this relentless pursuit reveals a tragic moral decline that unfolds in stages. Initially, his enemies latch onto minor, insignificant details, inflating them out of proportion in order to cause harm. When this fails and they cannot find a single genuine flaw, they descend even further, inventing complete lies that lack any trace of truth [מלבי״ם].
