תהלים, פרק מ״ו, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 46:3Sefaria

עַל־כֵּ֣ן לֹֽא־נִ֭ירָא בְּהָמִ֣יר אָ֑רֶץ וּבְמ֥וֹט הָ֝רִ֗ים בְּלֵ֣ב יַמִּֽים׃

Absolute trust in God's providence provides an anchor even during extreme scenarios of global destruction and natural upheaval. When confronted with the complete collapse of the natural order, reliance on God removes all fear [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This security remains steady whether facing massive earthquakes that completely alter the landscape [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם] or witnessing the deep, powerful ocean—described as functioning like a beating heart in the center of a body [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators views this upheaval either physically or symbolically. On a physical level, it represents a scenario where the dry land and the ocean swap places. Even if this is merely hypothetical—an impossible situation where the entire world turns upside down—there is still no reason to be afraid [אבן עזרא].

On a symbolic level, these massive natural shocks serve as metaphors for monumental historical and political shifts. A changing earth represents a sudden transition from peace to terror, or a thriving land turning into a barren wasteland [מצודת דוד, מאירי]. The image of towering mountains collapsing into the sea illustrates vast wars, political revolutions, and the dramatic fall of great kings and global empires [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. Some specifically view this as an allusion to the future downfall of Gog [מצודת דוד]. Yet, amid all this global turmoil, the people of Israel remain unafraid, knowing that every event is ultimately guided by God for their benefit [מאירי].

Another layer of interpretation projects these events into the End of Days and the period of the resurrection, a time when the current world will wear out and undergo a complete transformation [רש״י, אלשיך]. This future vision is deeply connected to the personal history of the psalm's authors, the sons of Korah. They personally experienced a miracle when the ground opened to swallow everything around them, yet they remained suspended alive in the air. Through divine inspiration, they foresaw a similar miracle for Israel in the future [רש״י]. According to ancient Jewish tradition, when God eventually renews His world, the righteous will remain unharmed by the surrounding destruction. God will grant them wings like eagles, allowing them to glide safely above the raging waters [תורה תמימה]. Adding a theological perspective, while the nations of the world will face their punishment all at once during this global collapse, God's presence continuously accompanies Israel throughout their exile, protecting them from destruction until the final redemption when the natural order is forever changed [אלשיך].
