תהלים, פרק ה׳, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 5:7Sefaria

תְּאַבֵּד֮ דֹּבְרֵ֢י כָ֫זָ֥ב אִישׁ־דָּמִ֥ים וּמִרְמָ֗ה יְתָ֘עֵ֥ב ׀ יְהֹוָֽה׃

Absolute trust in divine justice brings a profound sense of clarity, especially when facing those who hide their cruelty behind a mask of friendship. The plea for the downfall of the wicked does not stem from a petty desire for personal revenge. Rather, it is a pure demand for objective justice against those who casually shed blood and speak lies [אלשיך].

The focus narrows from a broad group of liars to a singular, violent man, suggesting a sharp distinction between a general crowd of wrongdoers and a specific, leading mastermind [אלשיך]. Some view this through the lens of King David's personal struggles, pointing to those who spread vicious lies about him to King Saul. These enemies presented themselves as loyal friends while secretly plotting his murder [מצודת דוד]. Others identify this singular mastermind as Ahithophel, the cunning advisor who urged Absalom to hunt down and assassinate David through trickery [אלשיך]. Taking a broader historical perspective, this plea for justice is also directed against the vicious nation of Amalek and its descendants [רש״י].

The true danger of such enemies lies in their deep hypocrisy. They seek to destroy others while hiding behind a facade of fake love [מצודת דוד]. This violence is not always physical; a person who gossips and spreads slander is equally destructive, using their tongue like a deadly, slaughtering arrow [אבן עזרא]. Because of their actions, these individuals become utterly abominable in the eyes of God [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. God's response is absolute: He does not merely punish them, but completely uproots and distances them from His presence [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, this divine rejection extends beyond the physical world, ensuring that such deceitful people lose their place entirely in the World to Come [אלשיך].
