תהלים, פרק נ״ו, פסוק י׳

Psalms 56:10Sefaria

Absolute trust in God's protection becomes most clear during moments of intense danger. When a person cries out for help and is saved, that rescue serves as living proof of God's presence. There is a deep certainty that attackers will turn back the very day a prayer is directed to God [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The mere sight of someone calling out to God is enough to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies and force them to retreat [אבן עזרא].

This dynamic played out as an actual historical event in the life of David. Immediately after he offered his prayer, the Philistines ceased their pursuit and stopped trying to take his life [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that the exact timing of such a retreat is deeply significant. When enemies back away in fear on the very day a prayer is spoken, it provides clear evidence that God is actively watching, helping, and guarding. This is not a random coincidence [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Through this direct response, the person praying gains an absolute, unshakeable certainty in God's protection [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A broader look at David's history reveals another layer to this experience. Even after escaping the Philistines, David remained on the run from Saul. In the middle of this difficult reality, David sought a sign that the royal throne was truly meant for him and that God was standing by His side. The proof came when David confronted Saul and called out to him. In response, Saul backed down, ended his pursuit, and actually praised him. This retreat was more than just a personal escape. It was a divine confirmation of David's future reign, serving as an early sign that entire nations would eventually turn away and flee before him [אלשיך].
