Psalms 57:2Sefaria

From the depths of a hidden refuge, a desperate cry rises from a man facing a dual struggle for both his life and his spirit. Pursued by King Saul, the fugitive pleads for God's grace in a moment of extreme danger.

The repeated plea for mercy can be understood in two main ways. One approach views the repetition as an urgent, intensified cry, natural for a person calling out in deep distress Another perspective sees the double request as a plea for two distinct types of salvation. The first is a request for spiritual grace, asking that God help him overcome his own impulses so he does not kill his pursuer. The second is a plea for physical survival, asking that Saul does not kill him

This division between the physical and the spiritual continues throughout the prayer. The declaration that the soul takes shelter in God refers specifically to the spiritual self. It seeks a haven in God to avoid the grave sin of harming God's anointed king [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In contrast, the image of seeking refuge in the shadow of God's wings relates to the physical body. It paints a picture of protection from mortal danger, much like a mother bird shielding her young chicks under her wings to hide them from a circling predator

The fugitive asks to remain under this Divine protection until the current disaster, destruction, or evil intentions completely pass Specifically, he prays to stay hidden until Saul and his men leave the area and abandon their harmful plans [רד"ק, מלבי"ם]. Asking for protection until the danger passes does not imply that God's presence will leave him afterward. Rather, it means that once the immediate threat is gone, God's help will have achieved its complete purpose [מאירי]. Furthermore, the request is for an enduring shelter. The fugitive understands that even if he survives this encounter, the chase may resume, and therefore he requires God's protective shadow until the threat of evil has vanished entirely [מצודת דוד].
