Psalms 62:6Sefaria

אַ֣ךְ לֵ֭אלֹהִים דּ֣וֹמִּי נַפְשִׁ֑י כִּֽי־מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ תִּקְוָתִֽי׃

In moments of crisis, an individual may turn inward, speaking directly to their own soul to guide it away from relying on human intervention or fearing enemies. Rather than being consumed by the threats and schemes of adversaries, the person makes a conscious choice to place all trust in God [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This inward coaching demands that the soul focus its expectation and hope exclusively on Him alone [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators views this quiet waiting and patient anticipation [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק] as a profound recognition that God is the single source of salvation. The speaker reminds their soul that just as deliverance has always come from Him in the past, He alone will rescue them from their current adversaries.

A deeper layer of introspection offers a different perspective on the very nature of prayer and hope. Often, people pray primarily for physical rescue or material needs. When these prayers are not answered immediately due to personal shortcomings that delay the response, they tend to despair and mistakenly place their trust in other people. To counter this, the soul is instructed to petition God solely for its spiritual needs, such as forgiveness for sins and a closer relationship with Him. By focusing entirely on doing their part to repair the soul, the person can rest assured that God will naturally and automatically fulfill their physical hopes and bodily needs [אלשיך].
