Psalms 73:16Sefaria

A profound internal struggle unfolds when a person confronts the apparent lack of justice in how the world is run. Fearful of voicing these heavy doubts aloud lest it cause others to stumble or question divine providence, the psalmist chooses a path of silent endurance. He turns his questions inward, confining his turbulent thoughts to his own mind and heart.

Seeking clarity, he reflects deeply on the order of the world [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His ultimate goal is to comprehend God's ways [רש״י], to find a true and just reason for how God guides reality [אלשיך], and to unlock the hidden secret of divine leadership [אבן עזרא]. This contemplation is an intense mental and emotional effort confined entirely to his own thoughts

However, this intellectual journey leads to a frustrating dead end. The commentators offer two ways to understand the nature of this agonizing conclusion. One perspective suggests that the sheer reality of the world appears fundamentally twisted to him, devoid of honest justice and fairness Another approach views the agony as the cognitive struggle itself. The psalmist turns the matter over and over in his mind, but the secret remains entirely out of reach, rendering his attempt to understand deeply exhausting and ultimately pointless

Yet, there is a crucial realization in how this frustration is perceived. The apparent injustice is only an illusion seen through limited human vision, while in absolute truth, there is undoubtedly a correct and just reason for all of God's actions [אלשיך]. Alternatively, this perception of struggle is entirely internal, an exhausting conflict taking place solely within the vision of his own heart [רד״ק].
