Psalms 73:23Sefaria

In the middle of a severe crisis of faith, when a person is overwhelmed by doubts after witnessing the success of the wicked, a profound choice emerges. Despite the deep confusion regarding divine justice, a person can remain steadfast, never moving away from their faith and fear of God [רש״י, אלשיך]. The primary approach among commentators is that this reflects a constant, unbroken devotion to serving God. Even when following Him brings no visible achievements and His ways remain difficult to understand, the very act of walking alongside God is considered the ultimate privilege

Taking a deeper philosophical approach, this enduring commitment is rooted in a person's true essence. The core of a human being is not the physical body, which is constantly altered by time and the changing events of the world, but rather the soul and the intellect. This spiritual self remains entirely stable and unchanging, living an eternal, divine life through a continuous connection with God [מלבי״ם].

However, maintaining this steadfast path does not rely on human strength alone. When a person is on the verge of giving in to despair and their faith begins to slip, God directly intervenes to provide support. He actively holds the person up, keeping them from falling into disbelief Surviving such a test is not the result of natural endurance, but of direct divine providence that prevents a descent into heretical thoughts [אלשיך]. It is as if God physically takes the person by the hand to lead them forward Beyond simply stopping a fall, this divine support also grants the intellectual clarity needed to truly understand God's wisdom [רד״ק].

Building on the idea of the spiritual self, human nature can be understood through the metaphor of two hands. The left hand pulls a person downward toward physical desires and material life. In contrast, the right hand represents the power to rise above the physical world and live a pure, spiritual life. God grasps this right hand specifically, protecting the person from sinking into bodily cravings. By securing this upward pull, God guides the person to act from pure, heavenly motives, completely separated from the fleeting successes of the material world [מלבי״ם].
