The downfall of the wicked is not simply a practical defeat, but an escalating process of humiliation and loss. It begins with a deep sense of shame as the enemies realize their decision to fight was entirely useless and their efforts will bring no results [אלשיך, מצודת דוד]. Once they recognize the foolishness of their wicked choices, they are struck by an eternal, unending dread.

This terror gives way to an even darker state. While some commentators view this next phase as a continuation of their shame and disgrace [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], others describe it as a much more severe level of humiliation. The despair becomes so overwhelming that they feel a desperate urge to dig into the earth and hide their faces from the world [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Ultimately, this intensifying journey of humiliation reaches its absolute end, culminating in their swift and total destruction [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
