תהלים, פרק פ״ג, פסוק א׳

Psalms 83:1Sefaria

שִׁ֖יר מִזְמ֣וֹר לְאָסָֽף׃

A massive coalition of nations gathers with a single, unified goal: the total destruction of the people of Israel. Yet, the response to this terrifying threat is framed with music, anticipating the ultimate downfall of these enemies. Framing the event with song reflects a profound truth: there is genuine rejoicing when the wicked perish. Furthermore, the link to Asaph, a descendant of Korah, highlights that the defeat of these hostile nations brings direct salvation to Israel. This victory also carries a deeper symbolic meaning, pointing toward a future time when the sunken gates of the Temple will rise from the earth [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that this situation is rooted in a specific historical event during the reign of King Jehoshaphat. At that time, a massive military alliance formed against Judah, led by the peoples of Seir, Ammon, and Moab, alongside other neighboring nations. Faced with this overwhelming threat, King Jehoshaphat turned to prayer and declared a public fast. In response, the spirit of God rested upon Jahaziel, who was also a descendant of Asaph. He delivered a prophetic message to the people, telling them not to fear, for the battle belonged entirely to God. The conflict concluded with a miraculous deliverance when God threw the enemy camp into utter confusion, causing the allied armies to turn on one another and destroy themselves [מלבי״ם].

In contrast to this historical interpretation, another perspective views the conflict not as a single event from the past, but as a description of the ongoing exile. According to this approach, the narrative captures a continuous reality in which the nations of the world unite and conspire to harm Israel, seeking to erase their very existence as a people [מאירי].
