תהלים, פרק פ״ג, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 83:5Sefaria

A profound hatred has the power to unite even the most bitter rivals. The enemies of Israel, who routinely fight and despise one another, willingly set aside their usual conflicts to join forces against a single target [מאירי]. They actively speak and plot with one another [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם], driven by an intense desire to completely destroy the nation [מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators is that this alliance seeks to entirely uproot Israel's status as a people. The goal is so absolute that even if a few scattered survivors manage to escape, their numbers would be too small to sustain any true national identity [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Historically, this ambition to erase the memory of the nation takes shape on both physical and spiritual fronts. Physically, it manifests in literal attempts at extermination, much like the unified plot of Haman and Ahasuerus during the Persian exile [אלשיך].

On a deeper, spiritual level, this war is ultimately waged against God and the belief in His unity. The very name of the nation serves as a testament to a people guided by a divine providence that transcends the laws of nature. By attempting to erase the nation's existence, the enemies hope to abolish faith itself and strike at the reality of God, whose presence is recognized in the world through the survival of Israel [מלבי״ם]. This spiritual assault was clearly seen during the oppressive decrees of the ancient Greeks. Their primary objective was to cause the people to sin and publicly declare that they had no share in the God of Israel. By severing the people from their faith, the Greeks hoped to strip away God's protection, ensuring the nation would be forgotten forever [אלשיך].
