תהלים, פרק פ״ג, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 83:12Sefaria

A powerful plea is made for a decisive and symbolic strike against the leaders of hostile nations, drawing heavily on the historical memory of great past triumphs. The primary approach among commentators is that this request is aimed squarely at the current enemy leadership, wishing for them to meet the exact same fate as the defeated Midianite leaders of the past.

The focus rests on the highest levels of enemy society, specifically targeting their ministers, dignitaries, princes, and kings [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי ם ושטיינזלץ]. While some interpret the plea as a wish to strike the general enemy population alongside their elite leaders, others view it as a targeted request specifically against the nobility [מאירי, מלבי״ם]. The historical figures referenced are universally identified as the commanders and royalty of Midian from the era of the Judges, who were completely destroyed by Gideon. The goal is to bring that same absolute ruin upon the current enemy commanders.

This intense focus on the enemy's highest-ranking officials is highly intentional. The desire is not merely for the enemy to suffer casualties in a standard battle. Instead, the leaders themselves must fall in a direct and personal manner. This specific type of defeat serves a greater purpose: it ensures that all nations will clearly recognize that God personally delivered this blow to protect His people, mirroring how Gideon struck down the Midianite kings with his own hands [אלשיך].
