The relationship between humanity and God operates on a profound principle of reciprocity, where human action in the physical world triggers a direct spiritual response from above. The primary approach among commentators is that there is a clear connection between the good deeds performed on earth and the positive decrees and abundance that flow down from heaven [רד״ק].
As truth is revealed from below [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and increases in the world [מצודת דוד], it takes the practical form of people speaking honestly and performing good deeds [רש״י, רד״ק]. Some commentators identify this truth specifically with the act of charity [חומת אנך, רש״י]. This concept is reflected in the teachings of the sages, who note that rains of blessing fall in the merit of faithful individuals who preserve truth on earth. It is also demonstrated by the actions of King Monobaz, who distributed all his royal treasures to the poor during years of drought. He explained that while his ancestors hoarded material wealth in this world, he chose to gather spiritual treasures of charity for the World to Come—a realm beyond human control where the fruits of one's actions endure forever [תורה תמימה]. Alternatively, this earthly growth can be understood as an internal, cognitive process. In this view, individuals bring their intellect from potential into reality, actively working to perfect themselves [מאירי].
The imagery of sprouting from the earth is deliberate, symbolizing a gradual process of initiation. Just as a plant slowly begins to emerge from the soil, the very decision and commitment to give charity or to develop one's mind serves as the vital starting point of action [מלבי״ם, חומת אנך, מאירי].
In response to this human awakening, a heavenly reaction occurs. Justice and the Divine Presence look down from above to bestow goodness and reveal themselves in this world [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Much like the gradual sprouting on earth, this heavenly gaze is only the initial stage of the divine response [מלבי״ם]. God looks down from on high not only to issue good decrees in accordance with human actions [רד״ק], but also to offer His divine assistance. He opens a path for the individual, guiding them toward ultimate abundance and personal perfection [מאירי].
