תהלים, פרק צ״ח, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 98:4Sefaria

הָרִ֣יעוּ לַ֭יהֹוָה כׇּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ פִּצְח֖וּ וְרַנְּנ֣וּ וְזַמֵּֽרוּ׃

A call for joy and praise echoes far beyond the borders of Israel, reaching out to the entire world. The revelation of God and the redemption of His people are not isolated events; they profoundly impact all of humanity. The primary approach among commentators is that the nations of the world are invited to rejoice because Israel's salvation brings about a universal era of peace. In this new reality, global salvation is achieved, and wars between nations cease entirely [רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, an alternative perspective views this global call as a stern warning and a demand for submission. This is directed particularly at the mighty empires that previously oppressed Israel. These nations are urged to accept God's absolute authority so they do not face the same severe punishments that once befell Egypt [אלשיך].

The progression of actions required from the nations reveals a clear development in how the world responds to the presence of God. The reaction begins with a loud, sudden shout [אבן עזרא]. This initial noise mirrors the roaring cheer of a crowd at the exact moment a king emerges from his hidden palace to show himself to his people. It is a massive, spontaneous reaction simply acknowledging that the king is present. Only after this initial outburst does the reaction shift into a structured, planned song of praise that details His specific actions [מלבי״ם]. This next stage involves opening the mouth to begin a formal melody [רד״ק, מצודת ציון].

Moving from a spontaneous shout to a structured song represents a deep psychological shift within the nations of the world. At first, they are forced into submission, reacting with an initial cry. Over time, they begin to understand that the worldly power they held was granted to them solely to fulfill the will of God, not to execute cruel oppression. Through this realization, they undergo a gradual transformation, ultimately arriving at a place of genuine acceptance and true joy, which they express through beautiful singing and music [אלשיך].
