In an era of awakening and clarity, the time of false visions and public deception will finally come to an end. Those who falsely claimed to speak on behalf of God will experience profound embarrassment over their past actions, feeling deep regret for the visions they shared. The primary approach among commentators [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ] is that this shame stems from the stark realization that their prophecies will never come true, forcing them to admit their visions were nothing but complete lies and figments of their own imagination. However, another perspective suggests a deeper process of repentance [מצודת דוד]. In this view, these false prophets will suddenly receive a genuine message from God. The sharp contrast between the pure light of true prophecy and the darkness of their previous fabrications will overwhelm them with a deep sense of shame.

Overcome by this embarrassment, these individuals will drastically alter their outward appearance, specifically by discarding the distinct hairy mantles they once wore. These unique garments were traditionally worn by genuine prophets, holy men, and spiritual leaders [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The impostors intentionally wrapped themselves in such clothing to project an image of pure, righteous individuals who lived simply and mourned over the sins of the people. By adopting this holy appearance, they successfully masked their true motives and tricked the masses into believing their lies [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

Once the truth is revealed, they will shed these garments for a specific purpose. The primary approach among commentators [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ] is that they will remove their special clothing to hide their past identities. They will completely deny ever having been prophets, hoping to blend quietly into normal society as ordinary people and everyday farmers. In contrast to this idea of verbal denial, an exceptional interpretation [אברבנאל] suggests a more physical meaning. The hairy garments were originally worn to cause physical discomfort, and the goal of these impostors was to make themselves look thin and frail. They tortured their bodies to appear intensely righteous to the public. On the day their lies are exposed, they will simply stop these harsh practices and abandon their false spiritual claims altogether.
