עמוס, פרק ג׳, פסוק י״ג

Amos 3:13Sefaria

An urgent divine call goes out to God's messengers, tasking them with delivering a severe warning to the people of Israel before disaster strikes. The prophets are commanded to listen closely to God's decree and immediately alert the nation. This act of warning serves as a formal testimony. By declaring the danger openly, the prophets ensure that the people cannot claim ignorance or deny being warned once the punishment arrives [מצודת ציון]. The primary objective is to give the nation a clear warning before the impending evil overtakes them [רד״ק].

The exact nature of this looming disaster is viewed from different angles. Some suggest the prophets are warning of a massive future earthquake or approaching enemy forces that will desecrate the altars [אבן עזרא]. Others push back against the idea of an earthquake, arguing that the straightforward meaning points exclusively to an invading army that will devastate the land. In this view, the destruction will specifically target the altars of Bethel as well as the luxurious estates of the kings and officials, including their winter, summer, and ivory homes [אברבנאל].

On a deeper level, this prophetic testimony points to the nation's political and spiritual collapse at the hands of Assyria. Israel is likened to a bird caught in a trap set by the Assyrian king. The root cause of this entrapment is the sin of worshipping the golden calves, a betrayal that sparked internal conflicts and led to people turning each other in to foreign powers. Because this fundamental sin sealed their fate, the prophets are now urgently commanded to sound the alarm and testify against the house of Jacob [מלבי״ם].
