Ecclesiastes 9:13Sefaria

גַּם־זֹ֛ה רָאִ֥יתִי חׇכְמָ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וּגְדוֹלָ֥ה הִ֖יא אֵלָֽי׃

Observing the nature of wisdom in the world reveals a striking reality. Although intellectual pursuit does not guarantee financial security or material success, it remains inherently valuable. To prevent people from abandoning the pursuit of knowledge due to its lack of material reward, it is essential to recognize its true worth and praise the wise [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. The profound impact of this wisdom is a phenomenon of immense importance and personal significance [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On a deeper, symbolic level, this dynamic mirrors the constant internal struggle within the human soul. The body is compared to a small city under siege by a powerful king, representing the evil inclination. This negative force arrives early in life, spending years building strong fortresses of sinful habits. Standing against it is the good inclination, taking the form of a poor, wise man. This positive force is often ignored, and its influence is rare among people. Yet, the core message is one of profound hope. A person who has grown old and entrenched in wrongdoing might believe there is no chance to defeat their negative desires. However, the true greatness of this inner wisdom lies in the good inclination's ability to conquer even the most heavily fortified habits and save the individual. Consequently, a person should never despair of God's mercy or the opportunity to repent, even after a lifetime of mistakes [אלשיך, תעלומות חכמה].

This internal victory is considered especially great on a personal level because the magnitude of the struggle scales with the individual. The greater and more prominent a person is, the more powerful their evil inclination becomes compared to that of an ordinary person. Therefore, the triumph of the good inclination is a uniquely wondrous achievement. However, this inner wisdom can only save a person if they actively remember and awaken their good inclination themselves. Once they take this initiative, they will receive assistance from heaven [אלשיך].

While the primary approach views this wisdom as a positive and redemptive force, an alternative perspective interprets earthly wisdom in a negative light. In this view, it represents the cunning of deceitful individuals who use their intellect for harm. It describes the shrewdness of dishonest merchants who cheat others, such as those who dilute wine with water or manipulate their scales to defraud the public [תורה תמימה].
