הַכֹּ֞ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר לַכֹּ֗ל מִקְרֶ֨ה אֶחָ֜ד לַצַּדִּ֤יק וְלָרָשָׁע֙ לַטּוֹב֙ וְלַטָּה֣וֹר וְלַטָּמֵ֔א וְלַ֨זֹּבֵ֔חַ וְלַאֲשֶׁ֖ר אֵינֶ֣נּוּ זֹבֵ֑חַ כַּטּוֹב֙ כַּֽחֹטֶ֔א הַנִּשְׁבָּ֕ע כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר שְׁבוּעָ֥ה יָרֵֽא׃

The reality of human existence often presents a deeply complex picture, where destiny, suffering, and ultimately death strike without distinction. The righteous and the wicked frequently share the exact same experiences and the identical final end, seemingly devoid of visible justice. This equality of fate raises profound questions about how the world is governed. The primary approach among commentators is that earthly events impact all people equally, regardless of their moral standing [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, this shared destiny is not random. On one level, it is a deliberate method of divine providence designed to preserve human free will. If the righteous were always rewarded with good and the wicked instantly punished with evil, humanity would be forced to choose good merely out of a desire for reward or a fear of punishment. Therefore, God disperses life events in a way that does not reflect exact, immediate justice [תורה תמימה]. Alternatively, this universal fate traces back to the first man, Adam, whose soul encompassed all future human souls. Because he sinned, death was decreed upon the entire human root. Consequently, even perfectly righteous individuals who have never sinned share the fate of death alongside the wicked, as they are all branches growing from the exact same root [אלשיך, תעלומות חכמה].

Human existence is framed by pairs of opposites that encompass every aspect of life: actions, physical purity, financial dedication, the intent of the heart, and speech [אבן עזרא]. A good person is one who helps others, while a pure person maintains holy thoughts [מצודת דוד]. In stark contrast, an impure person is immersed in indecent and frivolous thoughts [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Those who sacrifice dedicate their resources to bring offerings to God [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In the realm of speech, there are those who routinely swear without fear of lying or breaking their word, contrasted with those who actively avoid oaths out of a deep fear that they might fail to uphold them [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The absolute similarity in the earthly fates of these extreme opposites is emphasized through grammatical structures that denote total equality [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, תעלומות חכמה].

Beyond these general categories, a broad layer of commentary identifies specific historical figures who shared identical fates despite vast moral gulfs between them. Noah and Pharaoh Necho both ended their lives with a limp, and the holy sons of Aaron died by fire just like the rebellious congregation of Korah [תורה תמימה, רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. Moses and Aaron, representing goodness and purity, shared the exact same punishment as the slanderous spies, as none of them were permitted to enter the Land of Israel [רש״י, תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה, תעלומות חכמה]. King Josiah, who offered countless sacrifices, and King Ahab, who actively prevented spiritual pilgrimages, both died from arrow wounds [רש״י, תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה]. King David, who laid the foundation for the Temple, and Nebuchadnezzar, who destroyed it, both reigned for exactly forty years [רש״י, תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה]. Similarly, Zedekiah, who swore falsely, and Samson, who gave his life out of reverence for an oath, both suffered the identical, agonizing fate of having their eyes gouged out [רש״י, תורה תמימה, תעלומות חכמה, צאינה וראינה].

Despite knowing that a single earthly fate awaits everyone, the righteous continue to deliberately choose the path of goodness. They do so with the understanding that God will ultimately repay every individual according to their ways, and the true distinction between the righteous and the wicked will be fully revealed in the World to Come [רש״י, צאינה וראינה].
