Esther 5:8Sefaria

At a tense and fateful moment, rather than immediately begging for her life and the survival of her people, Queen Esther chooses to pause. She deliberately builds the tension, speaking words of appeasement while inviting the king and his highest official to yet another banquet. Her carefully chosen words reflect both deep humility and sharp wisdom. By appealing to the king's personal affection, she hopes to secure his goodwill. At the same time, she ensures that her forthcoming request aligns with his interests and does not compromise his well-being, effectively placing his desires above her own This appeal to his affection is also meant to soften any frustration he might feel over her refusal to answer him immediately [מנות הלוי]. Indeed, securing his favor is viewed by some as her greatest worldly desire

A distinct shift occurs in how she extends her next invitation. Previously, she prepared a banquet exclusively for the king, but now she invites both men equally. Having established confidence in her husband's love, she no longer fears that he might suspect her motives However, other commentators interpret this as a highly calculated strategy to provoke the king's jealousy and anger by placing a mere servant on the same level as the monarch. Furthermore, treating the official as an equal inflates his pride, ensuring that his eventual downfall from the height of power will be absolute and devastating

The decision to postpone her plea until the next day raises several possibilities. It is possible she simply lacked the mental readiness and confidence needed to deliver such heavy news [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, a widespread approach views the delay as a deeply spiritual and strategic maneuver. Esther had not yet witnessed any sign of divine salvation or the results of the Israelites' collective fasting. Much like a doctor waiting for an illness to fully present itself before choosing a treatment, she waited for guidance from God on whether to proceed with gentle persuasion or direct confrontation. This patience proved successful, as that very night brought the miraculous events of the king's sleeplessness and the elevation of her relative, which ultimately gave her courage Additionally, the delay granted the Israelites extra time to repent [שלום אסתר] and aligned with an ancient tradition that the ultimate defeat of their historical enemy's descendants always occurs on the following day [מנות הלוי].

At the close of her invitation, Esther promises to fulfill the king's word the next day. The primary approach among commentators is that she commits to finally revealing her true request. Her careful phrasing suggests she will only make this plea because the king commanded her to do so, rather than acting out of any sense of entitlement [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests her promise is actually a commitment to disclose her hidden nationality and family background, a secret the king had long pressured her to share [רש״י]. Ultimately, these interpretations merge into a single understanding: the following day, she will fully open her heart. She will reveal both her request and her true identity [יוסף אבן יחיא], showing complete devotion and a sincere desire to fulfill the king's will [מנות הלוי].
